In the European Union, financial institutions are required to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CTF) regulations, which are set out in the EU's 5th Anti-Money Laundering Directive (AMLD5). To meet these requirements, service providers need to verify the identity of their customers, which involves collecting and reviewing various documents. This process is a routine obligation for all customers, and the bank's request for documents is necessary to ensure they are meeting their regulatory obligations and providing a secure banking experience that adheres to EU standards.
